The Journalism Studies Division of the International Communication Association was established in 2004 as a dedicated forum for scholars and researchers committed to advancing the academic study of journalism. Founded during a pivotal period in media transformation, our division emerged to address the growing need for rigorous scholarly inquiry into journalism practices, ethics, and the evolving role in democratic societies. Today, the Journalism Studies Division of ICA has become the academic home for the most renowned scholars across the world.
Over the past two decades, the division has grown from a small group of pioneering scholars to a vibrant international community that spans continents and encompasses diverse research methodologies and theoretical approaches. Our division has witnessed and contributed to the field’s evolution through digital disruption, changing audience behaviors, and the ongoing redefinition of journalistic authority and practice.
As the premier international forum for scholarly research and intellectual exchange in journalism studies, we are committed to fostering rigorous academic inquiry that examines journalism’s role in society, its professional practices, and its relationship with audiences, institutions, and democracy.
Our mission encompasses supporting emerging and established scholars through mentorship and professional development opportunities, promoting methodological innovation and theoretical advancement in journalism research, facilitating cross-cultural and interdisciplinary dialogue about journalism’s global dimensions, and bridging the gap between academic research and journalism practice to inform both scholarly understanding and professional excellence.
Our yearly conference has become a place of celebration where old and new members meet to learn from each other and celebrate the best journalism scholar available. We strive to create an inclusive intellectual community that welcomes diverse voices, perspectives, and approaches to understanding journalism in all its forms and contexts.
Apart from organizing the conference, the division also organizes the following programs:
PhD Colloquium (click here)
Our annual PhD Colloquium provides doctoral students and early career researchers with an intensive, supportive environment to present their work and receive feedback from established scholars in the field. This program offers participants the opportunity to refine their research projects, develop their scholarly voice, and build lasting professional networks. Each colloquium features structured feedback sessions, career development sessions, and an onboarding opportunity for the next generation of journalism studies scholars.
Mentorship Program
The Journalism Studies Division Mentorship Program connects emerging scholars with experienced faculty members and researchers in the field. This program pairs mentees with mentors based on research interests, methodological approaches, and career goals. This initiative provides an opportunity for professional guidance and helps participants navigate the academic landscape and enjoy ICA.
Matchmaking Program
Our Matchmaking Program facilitates research collaborations by connecting scholars with complementary expertise, interests, and resources. Whether participants are seeking co-authors for publications, collaborators for grant applications, or partners for international research projects, this program helps forge productive academic partnerships. By bringing together researchers from different institutions, career stages, and geographical locations, the Matchmaking Program strengthens the global journalism studies community and promotes collaborative scholarship that transcends traditional boundaries.
